spread the love

November 7th, 2007

i’m fortunate to know some really amazing and selfless people, and am proud to say i’m related to a few of them…
after visiting ethiopia, my cousin, justin, started a project to build a school in a remote villages he visited called Gendaweha Gabriel. I’m really in awe of what he’s accomplished so far, and can’t wait to see how the love spreads.

Check out my little cuz and his amazing work at http://spreadtheloveproject.com.

The Week In Review

November 5th, 2007

This week I learned several new things:

  1. A cardiac arrest is not the same thing as a heart attack.
  2. The food at Mt. Sinai is excellent (note: this was second hand information as I did not taste the food myself)
  3. If you have a pacemaker you can or cannot stand in front of the microwave (note: that one depends on whether you ask mom or dad).

While I do love learning, I think I’ll spend this week reading a text book or something. Less exciting, sure, but learning none-the-less.

my parents are home and still cooler than me

October 30th, 2007

well, that’s not entirely true. but this weekend my parents celebrated their 30 year anniversary and went to C5 @ the crystal. Mom’s friend, marla, is thinking of going, so mom sent her the following review. i think mom should consider writing professionally.

This is the link I found to the menu at C5 I thought this was a sampling, but in fact it is the complete menu. As I told you, it is
very short with not much selection. Not all the items on our menu were exactly the same, but the menu was similar

Joel had nothing in C1 I had a beet salad with goat cheese to be polite (I hate beets)

Neither of us had anything in C2 Bread was delicious

InC3 (main) I had the black cod which was very good. It was topped with lobster hollandaise that was so rich that Marla you would shoot yourself before youwould eat it. Joel had the strip loin that was so miniscule (as were all portions) that I would not even taste it for fear of deprving him.

I ordered dessert (desperate ) that was good. Lemon beignets. Mmmm Deep fried lemon filled tiny donuts. Again Marla… not for you. Actually not for me either. But I was ravenous, and devoured them Joel said it is because I have not had a donut in years but they were not unlike Tim Hortons lemon filled Can’t say for sure

Service was mediocre. Twice got up to pour my own San Pelligrino. Ended the nite with a take out pizza at midnite at the
Intercontinental cause we were starving…

This is my review I do not want to stop you from an experience you may enjoy. Now that you have the facts, it is up to you.. You may like it.

If only my parents were to take my suggestion and go to Foxley they would have had a much happier meal. I guess that’s what keeps me cool.

Last China email

October 22nd, 2007

My parents get home later today, so this is the last email from Mom. I guess I’ll have to get my own life to blog about now..

Too busy in Shanghai to even stop and email. The city is incredible with buildings the likes of which we don’t see at home. And at night each building is illuminated with dancing, multicolored lights making the vista even more spectacular
Highlights included
– a four hour tour of what was the Jewish ghetto with in depth historical perspective of the history by our Israeli guide
_ a visit to the Jade temple where we witnessed a monk emptying the dollars from the collection box into a bag next to an armed security guard
-The Peoples Park where parents gather on Sunday morning with homemade signs detailing the attributes of their kids (pictures included) in an attempt to find them a match. The Chinese version of Jdate
-tea at a tradition tea house and dumplings at a local eatery where the line up for take out was 1 1/2 hours long. We ate in and yes I had 2
_ A chef in a casual restaurant who agreed to take instruction from me and put the broccoli into the chicken stir fry…as strange as he thought it was
_continued attempts for locals to speak English to us…Last nite on the way to dinner we visited a department store and at 8 at nite were greeted by each salesperson with “:Hello. Good morning” Remember this was 8 at nie
_a trip on the bullet train which travels at a speed of 437 km per hour and is incredibly smooth
_ bizarre signage. Yesterdays favorite noted that guests to the park were forbidden to  urinate or shit!  Honest

Lots more to share and a million pictures.  See you soon. Can’t wait

Siblings are scary

October 19th, 2007

Today on Facebook I saw a friend’s Relationship Status switch to “Engaged”. Now, this is something we’re all waiting for so I immediately got excited and phoned his Mom to get the story. Her reaction was  “What are you talking about? He’s not engaged”

Several minutes later it was uncovered that this was the youngest brother’s idea of a practical joke.

Siblings are scary.

why i am technically challenged

October 16th, 2007

as you’ve realized, my parents are in China. so I’ve taken over their house.
there’s no food in the fridge, no annex fun in walking distance, nor are my super awesome parents around to talk to. so, you ask, why am i here? that’s easy! dad got a new TV.
yes, we’ve entered the 21st century now! an HDTV and PVR to boot! and life with a PVR is GREAT.
i mean, when someone called during Beauty and Geek, I was able to pause the prom scene and take the call. And now I get to watch the rest — commercial free! it’s like prime time, any time! ALL the time in fact! i get home from work and have an episode of 90210 to watch. if i ever get cable (and that’s a big if), i’m definitely going to get a PVR. or maybe i should move back home.

(and by the way, i’m not actually allowed to use the TV because my dad got mad i didn’t take him seriously during the “how to use the new TV” lesson. but who can blame me when his first instruction was “wash your hands before touching the remote”. i can only post this because my dad is more technically challenged than me and still doesn’t know what a blog is. hm, maybe the TC is genetic…)

one week down…

October 16th, 2007

Been out of touch due to internet issues but if this gets to you it means we are back in business and have arrived in Chongqing

Spent yesterday in Xian Suddenly felt I was in a foreign country. No English and nothing familiar Except Macdonalds and Starbucks and your local Gucci shop. Greeted at the airport by hundreds of screaming young girls with balloons. Not for us though. Winner of Chinese Idol was on our plane. And apparently from Xian
Highlight was visit to the Terracotta Warriors. All 6000 of them Truly a wonder…but after a while they really start to look the same. And now, like every other tourist/sucker we are sclepping our own 2 back to Canada and their new home

Cost us $100 in overweight bags yesterday (better the bags than me) and so today we forwarded all our no longer needed conference clothes directly to Shanghai to meet us. Not quite sure if we will ever see them again. All done on the word of the guide with no receipts. Really need to learn to travel light!

Dinner last nite was frightening. My food list is useless. There are colorful appetizing photos in all the menus followed by descriptions which it would be best to leave out. Fungus is a favorite. And lots of pig. How about a thousand layer crispy pig ear. Or duck neck or bullfrog. Even the special crispy BBQ chicken came complete with head. Ordered shrimp with egg white just cause I was so glad to see egg white. Arrived looking like melted marshmallow on top of tiny shrimp. Just gross but ate it out of desperation Didn’t count on more than 1 protein bar a day and I am getting nervous! Then got back to the hotel and consumed all cookies I could find in the coffee shop. Desperate. Also no wine here in restaurants… Only beer A glass or 2 of wine may help with the food problem. If there is no wine on the boat I may go overboard

Woke up at 5 today (4 yesterday) to catch our flight. Was so comatose I could not remember where I was or how to turn on the lights. However Joel’ you’ll be happy to know, managed to find the golf channel. Just like home

True toilet tale. Beautiful new airport in Xian. Went to the bathroom. Holes in the floor. Discovered the handicap stall had a real toilet…only catch no door! Whatever and Oh…toilet paper dispensers are beside the hand driers outside the stalls You tell me how you are supposed to get that
Off to the Panda Breeding center and then the boat for the Yangtze river

Friday in Beijing

October 12th, 2007

I’m still in toronto and the ‘rents are still in beijing. They have shopping and touring and culture, and here the phone and cable lines were cut. Sigh.

Good morning…
5 Am and cannot sleep
Yesterday morning was so interesting. This city is truly amazing. The skyscrapers, construction are endless. And everything is just so immaculate…everyone so polite. They really are being prepped for the Olympics.
It is astounding to see the shops in our hotel…Everything from Sephora to the largest Louis Vitton I have ever seen, and every shop in between …MaxMara, Dior, Marc Jacobs…. Hard to believe this is China!

Finally got to see some history and culture. Visited Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. Fascinating to hear the history. And then off to a traditional lunch of 100 inedible courses. What was really confusing is just as you start winding down and they serve something resembling dessert (like a sesame biscuit), the food starts all over. Or they combine meat with cookies. Very foreign. And silly if you ask me.

Dropped our group off at the Silk Market for a couple of hours in the afternoon. For some reason I have established a reputation of knowing how to negotiate. So a dozen people asked to join me and have me teach them the art. Even had 2 French women who I had to translate for.Walked in and vendors were swarming all around… “we remember you” -they shouted. Missy…. come back!” Hard to negotiate your way through stalls with a tour group behind you. I carry my own calculator… so I am really a pro. And I shop in bulk. If they don’t meet my price I exit with my team! A few weaklings dropped off pretty quickly and headed back to the hotel, some picked up the required skills and went off on their own,but the core group endured the experience. Each time I pass a booth I think I am hearing “Best price… Renee, Renee” Finally realized they are saying “really, really” So funny…Only 1 nut I can’t break though… The Bulgari lady on the 4th floor.Think she has an exclusive and that is the problem. Will keep trying Hate Bulgari… love the challenge

Another traditional dinner (dragon dance included) , and socializing in the bar til midnite. Too much food and wine. Really

More touring today…Tai Chi this morning to start which I will try. Traditional Peking Duck lunch. And then we have an early afternoon exit to the host law office, reception and dinner. Hope I can stay awake. No market today

Misses… Joel needs on

well, mom likes china more than india…

October 10th, 2007
Well, the ‘rents missed voting today. When they asked at the poll where the other people from my household were I told them about their trip. The people at the polling station agreed that my parents should have taken me along (and that they should have voted at the advance poll). Here’s mom’s email from today.
Just a quickie update as I head out the door…
Had a fantastic, full day yesterday. Toured the city which is amazing, bustling, and dwarfs any other city we have visited. Tall, modern skyscrapers anywhere you look.Busy, but does not seem nearly as congested as India. Prefer the pollution to the poverty of Delhi. Driving is more civil, without the honking and the noise. And even have a special lane and traffic lights for the cyclists. Just don’t care much for pedestrians. They will run you over anywhere. Also millions of uniformed officials on the streets. Some in grey, some green, and some black. No idea what they are doing. No one speaks English, but the signs around this area have a lot of English in them …probably changes in anticipation of the Olympics. And we are 5 minutes from a Starbucks that understands nonfact capuccino. What could be better
Made lots of friends in the Silk Market yesterday. What fun. Even overwhelming for me… the most experienced of all. Amazing how far a maple leaf pin from the dollar store will get you. That and a few dollars and you are the most popular kid in the aisle. Had to elbow a few vendors when they would not let go of my arm. Do I look like a shopper??? Best purchase of the day was for another lawyer shopping for his wife. Negotiated for a bag that they asked $3500 RMB for… Got it for $300. Now that takes skill. It is a huge complement when you leave a stall with a purchase and the vendor is yelling at you that “You kill me…I no like you… cost price” Music to my ears. By the way…never told them that the pins which they surrounded me for were made in China!
Off to Tianamen square. And don’t worry. Had an exquisite meal last nite at the Green Tea House. Probably one of the finest restaurants we have ever been at in the world. Wasabi prawns… Now we’re talking!
