geek gene?

October 18th, 2006

There’s an article in the Toronto Star today about WIT day at CASCON (which is tomorrow! AH!).

Q But how is it that women can juggle making computers with making babies?

Q But are the babies disruptive to the computers? How do you trust babies around all that sensitive equipment?

BAH! The article makes me SO mad.

But Sacha’s post about it made me laugh a lot. And helped me stop shaking. I’ll work on an email to Jen Gerson over the weekend.

I can’t wait to ask Telle what she thought of it tomorrow

edit: There’s an article in the Metro today that interviewed me and Kelly Lyons. Cool!

Hack Evening @CASCON

October 17th, 2006

Tonight was Hack Camp at CASCON 2006. There were more than 20 people there, despite the awful weather. Sacha and Stephen (nice homepage stephen!) gave a terrific introduction on what Hack Camp was going to be the rest of us chowed down on food. Then the fun began. Our first challenge was to format data so that Sacha could generate tag clouds. By tomorrow, each of us should have a web 2.0 compliant t-shirt 🙂 I was super excited when I used LAPIS to format my flickr tag data and impressed Sacha — though no doubt she has her own funkier way of doing it in emacs.

They were still going strong when I took off at 9. I wonder what they’ll come up with…

The unofficial CASCON

October 16th, 2006

After our workshop was done, we wandered nextdoor into the Agile all-day workshop that had just finished. I had really hoped to take part in this workshop, especially since the chair of the workshop was Matt Ganis, who I’ve spoken to over the phone. Unfortunately, scheduling didn’t permit me to attend. Lucky for me, though, these people are really passionate about what they do. And when you get a group of individuals like that together conversations don’t come to a hard stop just because it’s 5PM. So off we went to the bar for a drink and lively discussion. Hurray for passionate people!

CASCON: One Down

October 16th, 2006

This afternoon was my first CASCON workshop. It was pretty amazing – we had 30 people there, and a few waiting at the back in the hopes of getting a machine. There were a few minor glitches with the lab material, which was to be expected given the amount of code they involved, but nothing major. The feedback seemed overwhelmingly positive too. Sounds like CAS will be posting our materials shortly…

Anyway, time to continue preparation for Thursday’s CAS Women in Technology Day. I can’t wait!

Edit: Let’s try this tagging thing… Here is the tag!!!!!!

Bolin is on the blog

Check out the google blog to see what Michael did!!

Oh, you can see the Toronto weather if you’re clever – in celcius even! Under settings, choose your country as “United States” and then fill in your location as “Toronto, Canada.” If you leave your country as “Canada”, though, there’s no location box to fill in. Sneaky.

Further proof the CASCON WIT Workshop is Spot On…

September 26th, 2006

I received two emails today pointing me to this article in the Toronto Star. This article, which discusses lonelygirl15* and her too-good-to-be-true-ness, has the headline:

More proof there are no actual women online
YouTube’s popular Lonelygirl15 turns out to be a fake,
as filmmakers admit they’ve been producing online show

Sound familiar? So come on out to CASCON 2006 and help us come up with solutions to this real problem.

*Yes, I’m still obsessed with lonelygirl15. I don’t care if it’s fake…

An email to my sister (Subject: Facebook Warning)

September 26th, 2006

Dear Mutant,
As the fabulous sister that I am, I felt the need to notify you that as of today, Mom can get a facebook account. And you know how she’s been wanting one.
If you don’t believe me, you can check this out: http://blog.facebook.com/blog.php?post=2210227130
While I know we both adore our Mama, and would keep nothing from her, I thought you could use a heads up to make some of those “unflattering” pictures disapear.

Love,
Mini-Mu

you are reading an influential blog

September 18th, 2006

Shelly sent me a link today that has a list of influential women bloggers in Toronto and guess who is on it. (look for Kate‘s comment – I wonder if kate knows my mom)

I should start blogging more. Or less. Hmm.
