nicole is my hero

April 28th, 2006

I was reading the news online today, and wanted to hear what’s happening with the Harvard plagiarizer. I clicked through to the first article listed. The article was titled “Kaavya Viswanathan Is a Literary Fraud, Says Nicole Richie“.

I couldn’t stop lauging. Especially when I read this part:

Ms. Ritchie, author of The Truth About Diamonds, said she hadn’t read Ms. Viswanathan’s book How Opal Mehta Got Kissed, Got Wild and Got a Life; nor had she read Ms. McCafferty’s books. In fact, said Ms. Ritchie, she hadn’t read much of anything before writing The Truth About Diamonds because she “always thought people who wrote books were supersmart, so I figured you had to be supersmart to read books, too; but now that I’ve written one, I know better.”

I’ll admit, it took me a minute to realize that the site was satirical (I’m slow, okay). And it took Andrew pointing out that google news does have a sarcasm detector before I noticed the little “(satire)” after the source’s name on the row under the article’s title. Boy, that’s so hard to miss! I don’t know what’s wrong with me!

gnews

Anyway, while I appreciate google aggregating any and all news sources, I *would* like it better if they could list the true things first so that quick clicking slow pokes like myself don’t get quite so confused…

an idea gil had

April 24th, 2006

gil told me about an idea he had.

gil: I know, I’m going to create an antisocial networking site
jenn: that’s AWESOME
gil: I’ve thought this through
jenn: okay
gil: you don’t enter any hobbies or anything, and you don’t get matched with people who have common interests. instead you are just presented with a stream of random strangers
jenn: i don’t get it

someone else did. check out isolatr.

work/life balance

according to this article, you can have your cake and eat it too.

but the more i think about it, it really depends what your cake is. i mean, i don’t think i could give up having long hair. and gil would never give up his favourite grown up activity.

so is someone else’s cake my broccoli? or maybe it’s a lo-cal cake to me? oooh! or a sugar-free cake! hm, i wonder if it makes you fart.

books

April 16th, 2006

today i found out that one of my favourite british chick lit authors has a new book out. i was totally tempted to buy it, but i knew that if i did i would not finish Shogun. And i’m halfway done (the book is 1200+ pages). This would be the second time I’ve given up on this book after the halfway mark. That’s why I am putting it here in writing – I will finish Shogun before I start any other books.

Even if this means Shogun is the last book I ever read. hrmph.
