Through my outreach activities I’ve learned about some really cool women and what they contributed to the field of science/engineering. There’s one that’s fun to talk about – Hedy Lamarr. The girls like hearing about her because not only did she create signal technology that’s used every day, but she was also a glamorous movie star. Now there’s a play about her!
I wonder if there is a splatter zone… hehe

My cousin, Justin, was selected as one of Vancouver’s best and brightest teens in an article called Gen Next.

Here’s his write up in the June 2008 issue of Vancouver Magazine. And you should also check out his charity, spread the love.

What is 18 seconds Alex!
Yup, today I ran the sporting life 10k for the second time. Only, unlike last year this year I didn’t train. I hadn’t run more than 6k outside since last May. And that was probably at the race.
My time was 57:28 – not too shabby by anyone’s standards! So I was pretty happy.
This year I’m inciting myself to keep running (last year I stopped after the race pretty much) – as a reward to myself I bought a pretty new running skirt and shirt. So now I have to use em.

so between the writers strike and the fact that i don’t have cable, i’m about out of television to watch. so far i’ve:
- watched all three seasons of arrested development and weeds
- caught up on lost
- watched four seasons of 24 (well, last year). not so interested in watching the next two.
- tried season 1 of the sopranos — but don’t seem to have the attention span for it. i get confused with that many characters. i should try harder.
i’m working my way through dexter, but need another solo show to watch. so what’s next? please help me! otherwise i’ll be forced to do the things that i use television to procrastinate. like the dishes. and organizing my china photos (why did i take 250 of the terracotta warriors?!). grumble.

when the spice girls announced their reunion tour, i was totally, 100% excited. i needed to get tickets, and i couldn’t imagine not seeing it.
today’s announcement of the NKOTB (new kids on the block — i know we’re old, but we’re not senile yet people!) reunion tour brought mixed feelings. on the one hand, i LOVED the new kids. i had their cassettes, all of the cards, a doll and i think i still have my towel, so I *should* be excited. But on the other hand, I don’t really care.
why is that? maybe because i was young when the kids were first on the block, and am not in touch with the people that i used to page through Teen Beat with (side note: i remember fighting with my mom because i REALLY wanted to hang a picture of Joey on the wall and wasn’t allowed. sigh). but it *was* the first concert that i went to because i liked the music and not my parents (yes, i was at concerts from birth. seen everything from kenny loggins to james taylor to the rolling stones with the ‘rents). and i did stand in a hotel lobby waiting for them for several hours when i was in Philadelphia for my cousin’s bar mitzvah. and i used to give myself asthma attacks at camp by covering their faces on my NKOTB towel with baby powder and jumping. so yeah, i’ve definitely got a soft spot for the kids, even if they aren’t as shiny and new as they once were.
so what does that mean for the upcoming New Kids on the Block reunion tour? well, i will have to see the show (duh), but don’t need to shell out the cash for floor seats this time round. hope mom and dad are up for it. and hope the kids still got the right stuff.

this post is dedicated to jeff who msned me on invisible mode today cause he wanted to hear the end of the story.
on monday night i took my camera to henry’s. first guy tried to twist it off (like i didn’t think of that) and called over a guy named mike to fix it.
mike said the lens was still in perfect condition and he wouldn’t fix it – that because the filter was screwed on wrong, it needed pliers. and if the pliers slip and scratch the lens, it’s worthless. plus, it could also rip a thread of the lens, meaning filters would not stay on anymore. he gave me the name of a camera repair shop that he said would do it no problem.
a younger kid working at the store saw what was going on, and was all “hey! that’s easy to fix! just use pliers!” Mike looks at him and says “you can fix it, if you promise this nice young lady that if you scratch or damage the lens in any way, you’ll buy her a new one. with money out of your pocket.” he then suggested i take it to suncamera as well.
so i did. i went on wednesday, showed them the problem. the nice man got out pliers, and twisted the metal off and even put on the new filter for me. took 6 minutes for the whole thing. amazing. so now i’m back in business! woo!
(side note – why does something that’s $6 on Amazon cost $20 at henry’s? sigh)

yesterday night i discovered that the glass on my lens filter is totally cracked. what’s weird is i have NO idea how it happened.
and since it doesn’t seem to be screwed in properly, i can’t get it off either. sigh.
i guess that means a field trip to henry’s!
